Botox (botulinum toxin)

Botox is a protease exotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It consists of seven types of neurotoxins, but only types A and B are used clinically.

It works by blocking the release of acetylcholine from cholinergic nerve endings, causing temporary inactivity of the muscles or glands (both sweat and sebaceous) supplied by those nerves.

What it can be used for

  • Reducing facial wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movement (frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines).
  • Treating excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the underarms, palms, and soles.
  • Reducing oily skin / sebum production in selected areas.
  • Adjunct in the treatment of certain forms of acne and rosacea.

What to expect

The procedure is quick (usually 15–30 minutes), uses very fine needles, and most patients return to normal activities the same day. Visible smoothing typically appears within 3–7 days, with full effect at around 14 days. Results last on average 3–4 months.
