Dermoscopy or epiluminescence microscopy is the examination of skin lesions with a dermatoscope. This traditionally consists of a magnifier (typically x10), which allows inspection of the internal structure of skin lesions. This instrument is useful in distinguishing benign from malignant (cancerous) skin lesions, especially in the diagnosis of melanoma. Typical application of dermoscopy is early detection of melanoma but it also aids in the diagnosis of other skin tumors – such as basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and many other benign common skin lesions
